Pickpocket Awareness:
Watch out for a group of kids hanging together on the busy street of a tourist area. They may look cute, but there is a good chance that these ragmuffins are trained pickpockets. Their method of operation is to swarm around an individual like bees. The tourist is distracted by their numbers and their talking. Then little hands start flying in and out of the traveler's pocket and purse. Before the tourist realizes what has happened, they have struck and run. The element of surprise is on their side. Children do not appear threatening. Most people are not likely to have their guard up. And when they take off running in every direction, they are difficult to catch. Being aware of who is in your immediate area is the best protection. Shirts and pants with buttons help.

Local Telephones
When you visit a foreign country, quickly learn how to use the local telephone to request emergency service. Find out if you need a coin or token to operate the telephone and, if so, keep one in reserve. Knowing a few "emergency words" in that country's language can also be helpful.

Decoy Wallet
A decoy wallet with a few fake bills is a small price to pay should you find yourself the victim of a pickpocket. Sometimes in close quarters, pickpockets are difficult to detect . A decoy wallet leaves the pickpocket with a false sense of accomplishment, a cheap wallet, and some worthless fake cash. Meantime, your real cash and passport remain safely next to your body in a high-quality pouch.

Small Flashlight
Although it may seem obvious, a small flashlight for your travel bag or purse is handy. It's great to have when traveling at night or while staying in a new hotel. It can also double as a night reading lamp for consulting a travel guide or map.
